Liturgical Ministries

  • The Music Ministry seeks to create and environment conducive to worship by encouraging full participation through communal singing. Cantors, choirs and variety of musical instruments lead the parish community in singing both traditional and contemporary music. Anyone who likes to sing is most welcome to participate as a member of the music ministry.  Contact:  Ruth Ehresman (7:30 & 10 a.m. Sunday Mass) at 771-9036, or Gail Planer (4:30 p.m. Saturday Mass) at 771-8192.

  • Extraordinary Ministers of Communion help distribute Holy Communion at Mass and carry the Eucharist to the homebound or hospitalized. Men and women over the age of 18 are commissioned by the Archdiocese to perform this service.  Contact Sr. Mary Henry (772-1525, ext 203).  Click here for current schedule.

  • The Worship Commission plans weekly and seasonal liturgical celebrations utilizing music, the visual arts and liturgical movement.  Meets monthly on the 3rd Wednesday at 7:30 pm, in the Rectory.

  • Children's Liturgy of the Word.  Children ages 5-10 are invited to hear the Word in a manner specifically geared toward them.  The catechists use a variety of age-appropriate instructional materials and methods.  Contact Bridgett Wissinger (773-8604).

  • The Art & Environment Committee is a work of the Worship Commission, and is concerned with enhancing and maintaining a beautiful worship space.  Areas of concern include major projects, as well as tending to day-to-day, weekly, and seasonal elements of our church.  Meets on the 1st Tuesday of the month.  Contact Marie Andrews (776-3912).

  • Lectors are adults and teens who proclaim the Word of God at Liturgical celebrations. They serve approximately once every six weeks at the weekend Masses and prepare beforehand with prayer and study of the Scriptures.  Contact:  Sr. Mary Henry (772-1525, ext 203).  Click here for current schedule.

  • Sacristans keep the church orderly and ready for worship, including tending to the candles and the linens.  Contact:  Fr. John Vien (772-1525).

  • Ambassadors act as ushers and are responsible for taking up the collection at weekend Masses.  Ambassadors also welcome new parishioners and guests and greet and seat people at special celebrations.  Contact:  Sue Clavin (664-1885).

  • Servers assist with all Masses. Young people may begin this ministry in fifth grade and continue throughout their years in high school.  Contact Fr. John Vien.

Spiritual Growth

  • Christian Formation Commission:  Develops formal and informal programs to foster spiritual education and growth for adults and children at all levels.  Meets monthly on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Rectory.
  • St. Pius V Book Club:  The Club reads and discusses books that explore spirituality and the Catholic faith.  Meets monthly on the 1st Sunday at 7:00 p.m.  Contact Kent van den Berg (776-2016).
  • Holy Name Society:  Promotes works of Christian charity and piety.  Communion Sunday is celebrated monthly on the 2nd Sunday at the 7:30 a.m. Mass.  Meets monthly on the Tuesday following the 2nd Sunday.  Contact Le Sauerwein (773-8596).
  • Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA):  Works toward the Christian formation of persons new to the faith or a renewal of those who are lapsed or feel disconnected from the Church by providing guidance and education in the Catholic faith.  Contact Sr. Mary Henry or Fr. John Vien.
  • Retreat for Men:  offered every Spring at the White House Jesuit Retreat Center in South County.
  • Retreat for Women:  offered every Fall at various retreat centers in the area.

Social Outreach

  • C4/Churches Committed to Community Concerns:  Promotes social justice through education and action.  It encourages examination of public policy through the lens of Gospel values.  C4 is part of Metropolitan Congregations United (MCU), a regional organization of faith communities who have joined together to address issues of neighborhood stabilization, economic development and quality of life for all.  Meets monthly on the 2nd Wednesday at 7:30 in the Rectory.  Contact Sr. Carol Orff (773-9080).
  • Friendship and Justice:  A combined outreach ministry of St. Margaret of Scotland and St. Pius V Parishes that welcomes and invites gay and lesbian members to full participation in their parishes. Provides opportunities for members to share and explore in a safe environment and offer their various gifts and talents to and with the Church.
  • Ministry of Care:  This ministry provides support, encouragement, and services to the sick, elderly, homebound, and to their caregivers.  The approach is an holistic one, addressing the needs of the whole person, in mind, body, and spirit.  Some activities requiring the help of the parish community include:  the preparation and delivery of holiday dinners; the assembly and delivery of Christmas gift bags; and, the writing and sending of Valentine greetings to the elderly.  Contact:  Sr. Dorothy Ann Katke (772-1525, ext. 206).  St. Pius V is a member of the South Grand Senior Ministry.  Click here for a listing of important phone numbers.

  • The Immigrant and Refugee Ministry: welcomes, assists, and advocates for refugees and immigrants who are settling in the neighborhoods around St. Pius V Parish.  Projects in this ministry include the Meru Hunger Project, the African Thanksgiving Celebration, the annual Migration Mass on Epiphany Sunday, and the Vietnamese Tet (New Year) celebration.  Contact:  Sr. Paulette Weindel (772-1525, ext. 204).  The St. Pius V Immigrant and Refugee Ministry is supported by the Annual Catholic Appeal.

  • St. Patrick Center Casserole Program:  Provides home-cooked meals monthly to the shelter for the homeless.  Volunteers prepare the dishes in their own homes and deliver them to a collection point in the parish.  Contact Kathy Wywrich (773-6535).
  • St. Vincent de Paul Society:  The St. Pius chapter of this worldwide Catholic service organization operates a food pantry and provide material and spiritual assistance to people in need, right in our own community.  Two annual projects that require sizeable volunteer effort are the preparation and delivery of Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets.  Contact Ray Adkisson (773-1029).

Stewardship & Development

  • Stewardship & Development Commission:  Promotes the philosophy of giving back to God joyfully and thankfully by helping parishioners identify ways in which they can invest in the community by way of their time, talent and treasure.  The committee works with the pastor and Parish Council to develop the Strategic Plan for the Parish.  Meets monthly on the 3rd Thursday in the Rectory.
  • Building and Maintenance Commission:  Oversees the improvement and maintenance of the Parish buildings and grounds.  Contact:  Tom Huelman (776-2074).
  • Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA):  This yearly Archdiocesan fundraising endeavor supports ministry and charitable works across the St. Louis area.  The St. Pius ACA committee oversees the parish's efforts to achieve its portion of the overall goal.  Contact Joe Judge (353-8678) or Ray Adkisson (773-1029).
  • Donut Sunday:  Coffee and donuts are served every Sunday after the 10:00 am Mass, providing an opportunity for fellowship for our parishioners and friends.  Volunteers are needed to hot this function on a Sunday morning, every few weeks.  Contact Shirley Tabaka (772-1525, ext 200).
  • Fish Fry:  this newly resurrected St. Pius tradition is both a fundraiser and community builder.  Volunteers are needed and utilized to mount both monthly and Lenten fish fries.  First Friday of every month, beginning in September, and every Friday during Lent.  Contact Tom and Kathy Donahue (664-6480)
  • Gardening:  volunteer gardeners are needed to tend the grounds, including all areas around Grand Ave., Utah St. and McKean Ave., and the garden area between the school and convent.  Contact Eric Kraenzle (962-2858).
  • Parish Picnic:  This annual spring "fun-raiser" includes a parade, amusement rides, games, food concessions and music.  Held over two days, St. Pius reaches out to the surrounding neighborhood in the spirit of hospitality.  Needless to say, an event of this scale requires a tremendous amount of volunteer effort.  Contact:  Justin and Peggy Stein (776-4033).
  • Tailgate Sales:  Sales are held in the spring and fall, on the church parking lot.  This mini flea market and concession stand raises funds for the parish while providing motivation to clean out your garage or basement.  Contact:  Peggy Stein (776-4033).
  • Cabrini Academy Trivia Night:  This annual event test contestants' knowledge of useless (and sometimes useful) information.  Intense competition among trivia aficionados and fabulous prizes donated by area businesses make this a very popular event.

Advisory Commissions

  • Parish Council:  Serves as a sounding board for the pastor and advises him in the strategic planning of the parish.  Members are selected by the pastor and serve a two-year term.  Meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Rectory.  Contact:  Fr.   • Finance Commission:  Reviews the parish finances quarterly and advises the pastor in the financial planning of the parish.  Contact:  Sheila Eckhard (846-5899).

Youth & Education

  • St. Frances Cabrini Academy:  This K-8 Catholic elementary school serves several parishes in South City, including St. Pius V.  The academy is located at 3022 Oregon Ave.  Contact the school office for enrollment and program information.  Contact:  Maureen DePriest, Principal (776-0883).
  • St. Frances Cabrini Academy Advisory Board:  Advises the pastor and school administration on policy and programs.  The board is comprised of representatives from the parishes served by the school.
  • St. Frances Cabrini Sponsors Club:  Supports Academy athletic programs for boys and girls, including soccer, baseball, softball, basketball and volleyball.  Annual social and fundraising events include a Trivia Night.  Meets monthly on the 4th Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in Singler Hall.  Contact:  Laura Newsham (664-3624).
  • Scouting:  Girl and Boy Scout programs are available through St. Frances Cabrini Academy.  Contact:  Boys - Lon Griffard (773-5317), Girls - Cindy Rieck (772-6623).
  • South City Deanery PSR at Resurrection:  The Parish School of Religion (PSR) provides education in the Catholic faith to children in grades K-12 who do not attend parochial schools.  Classes are held weekly during the school year at Resurrection of Our Lord parish school.  Contact:  Sr. Loretta Sigler (775-5905).
